More people now identify public spaces as unsafe during dark evenings compared to three years ago. According to a new survey conducted by Ipsos on behalf of the Swedish Lighting Industry Association (Belysningsbranschen), improving outdoor lighting is seen as the most critical measure for enhancing safety.
The survey results are clear: 80 percent of respondents consider better lighting essential for safety in public spaces, compared to only 53 percent who prioritize more police or security personnel. Even amidst rising gang violence and shootings, people view improved lighting as a top priority for creating safer environments.
The survey also reveals geographical disparities. In southern Sweden, 85 percent of respondents believe better lighting is vital, compared to 51 percent who prioritize more police and security. In northern and central Sweden, the demand for improved lighting is even higher, with 89 percent in North Central Sweden and 88 percent in Upper Norrland ranking it as the most important safety measure.
This growing concern aligns with earlier safety studies, including one conducted by Belysningsbranschen in 2021, which noted a troubling trend: more people now report knowing of unsafe public spaces after dark than three years ago.
– Swedish municipalities must take these findings seriously. Improved lighting is a fundamental measure to increase safety, ensuring that walkways and public spaces are safe to use, especially during the darker months of the year, says Mikael Castanius, CEO of Belysningsbranschen.
Effective lighting not only deters potential threats but also fosters a sense of security and community confidence. By focusing on well-lit pathways, streets, and public areas, municipalities can create environments where people feel safe to move freely, regardless of the time of day.
Advanced lighting solutions like Citygrid offer an innovative approach to balancing safety and energy efficiency. By adjusting illumination based on real-time needs, Citygrid ensures streets and public spaces are well-lit when needed, reducing energy use without compromising safety.
Such systems discourage potential threats by eliminating dark hiding spots and make nighttime environments safer and more inviting. They are also invaluable for securing areas like parking lots, warehouses, and campuses, where features like automatic floodlights help security teams respond effectively.
Improved lighting isn’t just about visibility — it’s about creating safer, more inclusive, and more sustainable communities. Municipalities have the opportunity to lead the way in prioritizing safety through thoughtful lighting strategies.
